Our Story
As a young boy growing up in the centre of Old Delhi, the bustling Chandni Chowk Market was his playground.
Even before dawn he’d run straight there, barefoot on hot dusty ground. His eyes would be drawn to one stall, only for the enticing scent of another to steal his gaze.
Reaching up on tiptoes he stretched forward, loosening his tight grip to reveal a handful of small coins, fair exchange for what he perceived to be one of India’s most priceless treasures – a paper cone piled high with golden pakoras, every single piece bursting with wonderful flavours, perfectly seasoned and deliciously crispy.
By the last mouthful he would already have scrambled across the market from savoury to sweet, led to the mithai wala* by the hypnotic aroma of rose petals. There, gulab jamon, dripping with a rich, sticky syrup and garnished with a sprinkling of cashews, would have him licking his fingers all the way home.
A trip to this market, the very heartbeat of Old Delhi, was a special treat that my grandfather savours to this day. Namaste by Delhi Darbar is our tribute to him, so that others can, in some way, experience the excitement of that 9-year-old boy running around the market in bare feet.
